Yesterday, Apple announced a ton of new products – all of which you’ll find at MacSolutions Plus in the coming weeks and months. Here are our thoughts on what we saw at the big announcement.
- Widescreen display with 75% less reflection
- The latest Intel quad-core processors
- Faster graphics
- 8GB memory
- 1TB hard drive standard
- Impossibly thin – only 5 mm at the edge (that’s 80% thinner!)
- Fusion Drive storage option – get flash-like performance with the capacity of a hard drive
What we like
We’ve always been big fans of the iMac. In fact, many times someone will come into MacSolutions Plus to buy a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, but once we show them the iMac they change their mind. It’s not nearly as portable as a laptop – but, like any desktop computer, you get a lot more for the price. More memory, a bigger hard drive, a bigger screen – the list goes on and on. So if you don’t really need a laptop, we highly recommend the iMac. And the new models just have more to love. First of all, they look incredible. Second of all, they’re faster. And third of all, the new Fusion Drive is incredible – you get a (fast) flash drive and a traditional hard drive, and the iMac automatically keeps your most-used items on the fast drive, so everything just feels, well, faster. You’ll have to wait a little for them to be available – especially the 27-inch model, which is due out in December – but trust us, if you want the best desktop computer out there, it’s worth the wait.
Price – starting at $1,299

A few months ago, when we got our hands on the 15” MacBook Pro with Retina Display, we were amazed. Four million is a lot of pixels, and everything on the screen looks amazing, like you could reach in and touch it. Now, we’re equally excited to see the new 13” version, which will definitely appeal to people who don’t want to carry around a 15” laptop, or to those who want to save a little on the price of a 15”. In addition to the super-sharp display, we love the all-flash architecture. No spinning hard drive means everything just runs faster. If you’ve used a MacBook Air or an iPad, you know how fast programs open, and how fast it is to switch between applications. That’s the same thing you’ll find on the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Now, if you don’t need the top-of-the-line screen, the regular 13” MacBook Pro is still an amazing laptop – and it’s $500 less. But if you want the best laptop out there, and you have the money, then you’re going to love the Retina Display.

At less than 8” square and 1.4 inches thin, the Mac mini is just that – a mini Mac that sits on your desk and hooks up to a monitor. While it’s not a laptop, it’s obviously small enough that you can take it with you pretty much anywhere. If you’re looking for the most affordable Mac, this is it. It’s not as pretty as the new iMac, but it’s half the price, and depending on what you’re using it for it may be the perfect Mac for you.
